SisLove Rainbow Shawl

Project recap

My crochet skills are much less experienced than my knitting, so this shawl felt a bit intimidating at first. Still, I finally took the courage to start the project, partly because I wanted to use up this beautiful rainbow yarn.

At the first few rows I followed the video tutorial because I didn’t know how to read the crochet chart. But once I got the hang of it, I found that the chart is actually much easier to follow because I no longer need to constantly rewind and reply.

Yarn planning

The hobbii rainbow yarn is absolutely gorgeous! There are two ways use the colourway: starting from the centre which begins with red colour, or from the outside which begins with lilac. When thinking about colour placement, I considered that the farther out the shawl extends, the less visual presence those areas have. I wanted the lilac to be more dominant, so I chose to start from the lilac, making it the visual centre of the shawl. I also wanted to used up the entire ball, so when I realized I didn’t have quite enough to finish the last row (the border), I unraveled a bit to adjust. In the end, I had appx. 13g yarn of red yarn left.

Row count and measurement

I knitted the short version. Followed exactly like the pattern without any mods.

  • After blocking the shawl measures 34’’ x 75''
  • Total 60 rows including the border. The border row is row 12 on the chart.

New techniques learned

  • Read crochet chart
  • Picot stitch (yarn over 4x)
