Twinkle sweater

I’m wearing Treysta today and noticed that even with the short rows, the neck depth is a tad short. So, for this Twinkle sweater I decided to extend its neck depth by adding more short rows in the back before the raglan increase and separating sleeves.

Here are some measurements of the neck depth for my sweaters:

  • Twinkle (current): 0.75''
  • Treysta: 1.1''
  • Sirona: 1.5’’ (seamed sweater)
  • Store-bought sweater: from 1.5’’ to 2''

Based on above, I think my target neck depth should be at least 1.5’’. Doing the math, the remaining height of short rows should be appx. 0.75’’, according to my row gauge that would be 5 rows. Because it’s paired so I’ll do 6 rows with 3 sets of increments.

I looked at some resouces and tutorials listed in the bottom, and come up with the numbers for my size:

  • In the 10th of plain round, put a lifeline. The short row starts in the next row
  • Prep: count 37 sts after the BOR, PM. Count 48 sts, PM. Do the same for the direction before the BOR. Now the front is 73 sts, sleeves are 48 sts, back 74 sts, total 243 sts)
  • Rnd 1: Knit until 5 sts after the sleeve (total 37+48+5), turn
  • Rnd 2: gsr, purl until 5 sts after the other sleeve, turn
  • Rnd 3: gsr, knit until 7 sts before the previous gsr, turn
  • Rnd 4: gsr, purl until 7 sts before the previous gsr, turn
  • Rnd 5-6: repeat 3-4
  • Rnd 7 (this will be the 11th of the plain round in the pattern): knit the whole round, close the gsr

Improving Circular Yoke Fit with Short Rows [TUTORIAL]

To create a shallow U-shaped wedge from the bottom up, you start with shorter short rows that get longer and longer. In contrast, when you’re knitting top down you start with longer short rows that get shorter and shorter. Especially in raising the back neck I’ve seen — and used myself — short rows that create a wedge that’s wider at the bottom than it is at the top. This can literally look like hump on the back and you want to avoid it.

Tutorial: Adding Short Rows to a sweater pattern that doesn’t have them - Mostly Knitting Podcast - YouTube Version 1: Short rows in the yoke Divide into 1/3 ratio, and the increments of sts should be appx. 1''

Version 2: Short rows in the back (before separating) Divide into sleeves x 2 (20% each), front and back (40% each). The first short row starts 1’’ after knitting the sleeves, the next increment is appx. 1.25’'.
