Yarn planning
This is my first time working with 100% silk yarn. I’ve knitted 100% linen before and I heard their knitting properties are similar. I adore the drapey effect so I really have high hope on this yarn.
I shortlisted few colours based on my liking, skin tone and versatility, they are: Lamb’s Ear, Powder, Cardamom. I want this top to be my base layer so all of them are neutral colours. After visiting my LYS, I chose Lamb’s Ears. For the other two, I’m planning to use either of them for another base layer top.
Size and modifications
I knitted the gauge swatch with US 4 but my gauge is looser than the pattern, and I can see the fabric is loose as well. Moreover, the patterns calls for negative ease so I’m using US 3 needles instead of US 4. I’m knitting in continental style this time.
From the feedback from other Ravelry projects, the strap can lengthen quite a bit so I did the following mods:
- When knitting the strap, I held two strands together with the Woollike yarn (Acrylic 85%/Nylon 15%) for better durability
- Italian bind-off
- Initially I strengthen the i-cord from 4 to 6 sts by adding invisible lifted sts, but after 3 weeks of wearing, I have decided to unravel the strap and redo it with 4 sts. This is because I want adjustable straps by adding two loops on the back, and only 4-sts i-cord can fit in the loops.
Project timeline
- – Cast on.
- – Half way. Used one skein of yarn.
- – Bind off but haven’t done the strap. I’m planning to undo the bind off and extend few inches of length.
- – Block and done.
- – Redo the strap.
Retrospective
The adjustment straps looks quite chunky. I don’t think it matches the style of this elegant and minimalistic top, so it’s very likely I’ll unravel the strap again to make it as it is before. Everything else is perfect - the fit, the drapey effect. Though the yarn is a bit harsh on my index finger, I absolutely love this 100% silk yarn! Will buy it again.
